Resum

This paper examines the existence of possible links between the incentives to innovate, social and private, and firm internationalization. Different competitive environments in domestic and foreign markets, together with either decreasing returns or constrained capacity, may generate unexpected effects with direct implications on policies that promote innovation and export activities. A process innovation increases firms’ profits but it can also reduce domestic consumer surplus. In particular, we identify conditions under which the private incentive to adopt a process innovation is larger than the social incentive, a finding that is in contrast with the received literature.
