Abstract

In the last few years, transvaginal ultrasonography and colour Doppler have gained importance as indirect and reproducible non-invasive methods assessing uterine and ovarian blood supply. They are considered unexpendable tools with diagnostic and predictive power over every factor related to successful embryo implantation. In order to improve those procedures, a prospective study was performed in 62 patients included in an IVF (in vitro fertilization) program. The following data were recorded: influence of blood flow on follicle recruiting and development using colour Doppler, embryo and oocyte status, endometrial receptivity and gestational implantation. The main landmarks in IVF ultrasound assessment have been presented, after an extensive literature review on ovarian response, oocyte competence and general and ultrasonographic implantation markers. Transvaginal colour Doppler of the uterine and ovarian vessels and hormone bloodwork were the paramount strategies to achieve those objectives. Early and late ovarian response markers and ovarian competence markers were recorded.
