Abstract

The present doctoral thesis studies how the funerary monuments of Augusta Emerita as expression of beliefs are valuable instruments to study the habits of society. We focus our attention on the funerary steles and plaques of the colony, which are used in the same period. Both monuments were used by all members of society, but a further study shows significant differences between them. The dissertation begins with an introduction that includes the objectives, the methodology and the status of the issue. The chapter one deals with the Roman funerary practices. The analysis of steles and plaques (chapter two and three) studies typology, social structure, age, familial relations and formulas, and includes a brief conclusion. The study of the epitaphs allows to know the cultural level of the inhabitants of Emerita (chapter 4). Finally, in the conclusions both monuments are treated together.
