Abstract
irrhosis is characterized by the development of histopathological and morphological changes that lead to the appearance of portal hypertension, liver failure, and the characteristic complications of the disease. There is increasing evidence focused on the role of systemic inflammation as a main pathophysiological mechanism involved in the development and progression of the disease. The most commonly used prognostic scores, such as MELD (Model for End-Stage Liver disease), are aimed at estimating the liver function. As a result of the relevance of systemic inflammation, there has been a growing interest in the search for surrogate prognostic biomarkers associated with this event, being the C-reactive protein (CRP) one of the most deeply explored.
