Abstract

The magisterium of John Paul II, faced with the "culture of death" in which, because of the omission of the sense of God, the perversion of freedom, the logic of the evil and the prevailing confusion in defining man - the sacredness of life is eclipsed. Sacred Scripture affirms the sacred condition of man: the image and likeness of God. The mystery of man can only be understood in conjunction with the mystery of God. God reveals himself as the creator, the defender and the only owner of human life. The "mystery of Christ" discovers and restores the sacredness of man. The sacredness of the person takes place in its integral unity: body and spirit. The body can never be treated as a simple matter; it is a spiritualized body and the spirit is united in such a way to the body that it is embodied spirit. The body is a place of spirituality and any damage to it is an attack on the whole person. Defining man as a personal suppositum and channel that reveals the sacramentality of all creation, we can say that, in the reduction and manipulation of the body, an attempt is made against God, against society and against creation. The "conspiracy against life" is reflected in various signs of a darkening of the sacredness of man: social and economic imbalances, organized evil, the normalization of abortion and euthanasia... Against this threat rises the Gospel of life that engenders the culture of life. SACREDNESS, DESACRALIZATION, PERSON
