Zusammenfassung

A type of numerous and homogeneous Gothic style seated Virgins with Child is studied, with examples of high quality which have already been the focus of attention on the part of the autor in previous publications, whose approaches are corrected and clarified in part in the present article. After defining their characteristics with the greatest precision possible, the autor analizes problems that arise and states the issue in each case. The conclusion is reached that the expansion area of this type of statue is fundamentally Navarre, La Rioja, the Basque Country and Castile-León -concretely Burgos, Palencia, Valladolid, Soria, Segovia and León- with occasional extensions to Aragon, Cathalonia, Cantabria and Madrid. Their point of origin is located in Burgos and the possibility is raised that the presumed model may hypothetically have been found in the Burgos Cathedral previous to the present-day one, sculpted when the Gothic temple was constructed.
