Abstract
Bitumen slurries and cold-processed SMAs are possibly the most versatile treatments on the market today for pavement maintenance owing to their ability in a single application to provide a lasting asphalt layer on top of a varying surface texture, filling in cracks and hollows and sealing against atmospheric agents while providing the desired colour and texture. They possess very considerable advantages over other treatments such as low cost, speed of execution, non-skid qualities and improved aesthetics. Implementation of planned pavement maintenance programmes applying these treatments can achieve considerable savings in rehabilitation costs. This article mainly reviews the applications of these materials, after giving a brief description of their properties, composition and specifications, from the point of view of their performance, duration and approximate cost.
