Resumen
This article studies the relations between the Catholic Monarchs and the Papacy in the light of new historical perspectives regarding propaganda and the image of power. The scope of this paper is to reconstruct the multifaceted representation system developed by the Hispanic Monarchy in Rome by analyzing the diplomatic corps established in the city, discourses given in the Curia, literary works for propaganda purposes, liturgical and festive celebrations of Spanish victories, and nascent Spanish patronage in the Eternal City. As a result of these factors, the image of Isabel and Fernando before the Papacy acquired increasing prestige up to the point of incarnating the new paradigm of Reges Catholici that would penetrate the political imaginary of the Renaissance.
