Abstract

In spite of the wide scholarly consensus regarding the decisive turning point for the development of the arts in Spain marked by the advent of the Bourbon dynasty in 1700, there is still need to delve deeper into fundamental aspects such as the public character vested upon artworks, seen as tokens of the idea of progress. In this article we will pay attention to the pedagogic role assigned within the artistic ateliers, in line with the praxis of the Real Academia de Bellas Artes de San Fernando, to casts and contemporary works of art, geared not only at would-be patrons or fellow artists but also at connoisseurs and dilettantes.
