Abstract

Human trafficking is a phenomenon still prevalent in most countries in the world. Many companies take advantage, directly or indirectly, from these practices. The California Transparency in Supply Chains Act of 2010 is a new effort aimed at preventing this crime against humanity. This initiative requires companies to disclose their efforts against human trafficking throughout their supply chain. The goal of this requirement is to make sure that large companies doing business in California monitor other companies that usually operate out of the state. The hope is that consumers around the world, with their purchase decisions, reward or penalize companies depending on their efforts to stem trafficking. If a company tries to benefit from human trafficking to increase its profits, this initiative try to prevent it and punish that behaviour.
