Zusammenfassung

Ever since the publication of On War in 1832, the ideas of the Prussian general Karl von Clausewitz have been key for the understanding of the theoretical principles of war and peace. However, after the increase of the so-called low intensity conflicts, many scholars have criticized the applicability of his theories. Especially, this is the case of the Trinity of War, which states that people, army and government are necessary factors for war to take place. The specific case of piracy in Somalia serves as an example to prove that, regarding the motivations of actors involved, low intensity conflicts do have a place in Clausewitz’s theories. Besides this, the analysis of the perspectives of the conflict in a short, medium and long term provides a forward-looking approach, which is necessary taking into account the recent resurgence of piracy in Somalia in early 2017.
