Abstract

The paternal-filial conflicts have constituted since the beginnings of cinema a vast resource for the filmic stories. Taking as reference a series of contemporary author films, this text aims to sketch a series of common – though not exclusive – motifs that express the crisis of parenthood. In particular, four categories have been established: the archetype of the “fallen idol”, the authoritarian father, the melancholic father, and the separation or abandonment of the parents as a traumatic experience. As evidenced by this last model, the crisis of fatherhood has an effect on the son, which is why a number of the films that are analyzed are configured as coming-of-age narratives.
