Abstract

Deterrence theory became particularly relevant after the II World War, mainly regarding the spread of nuclear weapons. It refers to a situation where confronting states decide not to attack because of fear towards retaliation. This work illustrates deterrence theory taking into consideration different international relations theories. For that matter, it analyses the particular case of Iran as a regional player in the Middle East and a global player considering the United States. As a conclusion, deterrence still seems to be applicable in the example of Iran, where realist theories have more influence.
