Abstract

The Middle Ages discovered the aesthetic potency of the symbol as an icon of beauty and ugliness. This theory led John Scotus Eriugena and Hugh of Saint Victor to the aesthetic symbolism that asserts the beauty of the world as a symbol of the beauty of God, and to the metaphysical symbolism, when the corporeal world is a symbol of God. This notwithstanding, Albertus Magnus and Thomas Aquinas—who incorporated into their (system of) thought the aesthetics of proportion and the aesthetics of light—remained silent about the power of symbolism and tried to banish it from their new Aristotelian metaphysics.
