Zusammenfassung

Disability and chronic illness are conditions that have a considerable impact on family life, also in those members who are not primary caregivers. Researchers, in their majority, have been worried about the negative effects that disability and chronic illness generate in families. The aim of the present study is to assess certain indicators of subjective well-being in relatives of people with disabilities and chronic illness (N=234), comparing their experiences with a group of people who have not lived these situations (N=234). An instrument created ad hoc is used. It contains the following sections: (a) Satisfaction with life, (b) Personal identity, (c) Family needs and (d) Impact of disability / illness. Although disability and illness has an influence in well-being, it is not the only variable. There are no significant differences between families of people with disabilities / illness and the control group. The relatives of people with disabilities / illness state that they are satisfied with their lives and perceived themselves as capable of facing challenges. They also point out some positive impact of this situation in their lives, although they recognize having certain uncovered needs. Significant differences are indicated according to sociodemographic variables such as age or marital status.
