Abstract

Pope Francis has written to young people about vocation, describing it as “the gift of a love story” (cf. Christus vivit, n. 252). This expression contains different elements of his thought. In this article, we will study three of those elements which are especially significant for our culture. In the first place, we will consider Christian life as a gift, which is related to “the primacy of grace” (John Paul II). Then, we will discuss life as a story, a perspective that simultaneously affirms the importance of human freedom andthe narrative intelligibility of our existence. Finally, we will consider love as the interpretive key forhuman life, taking love as its origin, its goal and the way to live to the fullest degree. Thus, in dialoguewith contemporary culture, we achieve a deeper understanding of the importance of vocation in evangelization, and specific pastoral suggestions can be made.
