Résumé

“Principle” is one of the fundamental notions of Leibnizian philosophy, by which he means different theses that are essential for understanding reality. Despite the importance of this concept, it is rarely found defined completely: to make up for this lack, the analysis of the Monadology is a good help, since it allows us to discover Leibniz’s use of principles and the nuances that the notion of “principle” acquires through its use. Four fundamental principles are indicated in the text of the Monadology: the internal principle of change, the principle of contradiction, the principle of sufficient reason, and the principle of the best. The analysis of each of them will show that they share three properties: they are primitive, a priori and involve a multiplicity in a unity. This characterization of the principles opens the door to further research.
