This article addresses the need of every human community to look into the future in order to achieve a certain security. By examining the concept of the “fortuitous event”, however, the impossibility of a purely human construction of history is shown. In particular, the article considers one of the fortuitous events that stimulated the production of a great deal of philosophical literature, the Lisbon earthquake of 1755, and uses it as a mirror to understand the historical discontinuity that the present Covid pandemic has brought about.
