Abstract

The words of Jesus on the cross: «I thirst» (Jn 19:28) are an outstanding revelation of God's love for mankind and had an extraordinary influence on the spiritual life of St. Teresa of Calcutta. Behind her outward charitable activity lies an intense spiritual experience with God. The present study analyzes the way in which St. Teresa understood the thirst of Jesus by tracing her biographical-spiritual itinerary and offering a systematic exposition of her understanding of Jesus¿s thirst. In addition, a biblical exegesis of «I thirst» is carried out to discover its interpretation within Scripture itself, and thus establish the correspondence with the way of understanding and living the words of Jesus on the part of St. Teresa. In this way, it is also proven in this case that the saints are true exegetes of Scripture.
