Intentamos comprender la ética y la acción humana desde la perspectiva de las virtudes porque sin las virtudes los bienes nos están vedados. La verdad que subyace a este argumento es el hecho de que las virtudes permiten la búsqueda de la vida buena prevista para los seres humanos. Una teoría de la ética centrada en las virtudes requiere una visión aceptable del bien humano que nos ayude a mostrar cómo la moralidad puede explicarse en términos de rasgos de carácter que son indispensables o útiles para la consecución del bien humano. Tal vez porque es tan difícil encontrar tal visión del bien, las virtudes no han ocupado una posición central en la filosofía moral moderna. Alasdair MacIntyre cree que es posible e importante superar esta dificultad. We attempt to understand ethics and human action from the perspective of virtues because without the virtues the goods are barred to us. The truth behind this argument is the fact that the virtues enable the pursuit of the good life intended for humans. A virtue centered theory of ethics requires an acceptable view of the human good which will help us to show how morality can be explicated in terms of character traits that are indispensable or useful for the attainment of the human good. Perhaps because it is so difficult to find such a view of the good, the virtues have not occupied a central position in modern moral philosophy. Alasdair MacIntyre believes that it is both possible and important to overcome this difficulty. We expound some arguments against the current modern thought of the self or the individual and we stand in defense of the family and community which favors human flourishing. Morality should not be personal but rather of the community. According to the teleological framework actions are given intelligibility by the purpose or telos they seek to fulfill and man’s life has meaning in so far as it is directed towards the telos of man. We therefore submit to the need to reestablish some patterns of tradition informed by a quest for the good. We need to start a different way of life in which people work together in genuinely political communities to acquire the virtues and fulfill their innate human purpose. The virtues influence rational action and in this way affect the human good. That is why the virtues are defined in terms of the human good.
