Abstract

The economic fervour surrounding podcasting rekindles tensions between the inherent collaborative culture of independent creation and business models from platforms like Spotify, YouTube, Apple Podcasts, or Google Podcasts. Within this framework, there is a growing disparity between the motivations and practices of countercultural podcasters and those of formalised producers who aspire to monetise the process. This research explores the main motivations of 30 independent podcasters in Puerto Rico to undertake and continue their activities and determines whether their entrepreneurship provides an alternative form of capital (social, cultural, or symbolic) (Bourdieu, 1986, 2000). A qualitative methodology is applied and 30 semi-structured interviews are conducted with podcasters from 16 March to 6 May 2022. The responses are processed through the assisted qualitative analysis program ATLAS.ti. The independent Puerto Rican podcasters analysed are, primarily, driven by technological or media motivations, and personal, and creative content. That is, they promote forms of cultural, social, and symbolic capital, rather than economic capital. However, there is a growing economic motivation among the profile of formalised producers (6 cases out of 30) leading them to manage the sale of online consulting and educational services, subscription payment, Brand sponsorships, and live events for the community. This evolution breaks with the authenticity of a free media of conversation so as to create relationships. The recognition of being an alternative medium to the mainstream motivates one to pursue podcasting, while the management of a community motivates one to continue working in this field.
