Abstract

This paper analyses the legend «La batalla de los muertos» by Juan Iturralde y Suit as a document that helps explain the construction of the Basque mythical universe at the end of the 19th century. For this, a reading of the legend is offered as an ethnographic source and as a testimony of the ideological proposal defended by the Euskara Association of Navarra. On the other hand, other texts related to the Association are also analysed: Orreaga by Arturo Campión and the euskara descriptions by Iturralde y Suit. Finally, it provides an analysis of the development of the Revista Euskara and its importance around the constitution of the Basque nationalist myth.
