Résumé

Jacques de Callières (ca 1600-1662) was a French Marshal who served the Duke of Longueville. At the end of his life, he published a treatise explaining how to progress socially and economically. It was intended for the provincial nobility, holders of titles and income but with little political power. Also to the poor nobles and the cadets, who without money and contacts had serious difficulties to prosper. The first edition of the work appeared in French in the mid-17th century, but it was translated into various languages (English, Italian, German and Swedish) and was edited or reprinted at least twenty-eight times up to the mid-18th century. In this paper we study the various promotion strategies that he recommends to both groups.
