Abstract

A liquid layer under one-dimensional heating suffers a transition from convective rolls to a pattern where a second mode is present. This pattern has three main regimes, i.e., stationary, travelling and oscillatory. Here we describe the defects that appear in the travelling regime. Two kinds of dynamics can show up depending on the thermal characteristics of the boundaries: core of defects (sources and sinks) or defects that spread over the whole pattern.
