Abstract

The terrorist group ETA operated in Spain for more than 50 years, killing almost 900 people. The university, as another social agent, was also affected through the fear and threat that ETA spread in society. Especially because within the structure of the Basque National Liberation Movement, there was an organization, Jarrai, that targeted youth and had the university environment as one of its objectives. At the same time, it was to be expected that the university, as a forefront institution which is essentially designed for critical thinking and freedom, would therefore respond against terrorism. This article addresses the reaction of the academic world to some of the many actions that ETA performed in the Basque Country and Navarre in the Years of Lead, specifically between 1979 and 1983.
