Abstract

We used 99mTc-HMPO-SPECT and semi-quantitative methodology to study a relatively homogeneous sample of 10 right-handed, male patients with predominantly negative symptoms and a diagnosis of undifferentiated schizophrenia (ICD-10). The patients were evaluated using the Positive and Negative Syndrome Scale (PANSS) and were compared with a control group of healthy individuals. The results of SPECT revealed reduced patterns of blood flow in all the patients studied. Significant differences (low in the patient group) were found, mainly in the frontal and temporal lobes bilaterally (p < 0.05). Nevertheless, there was a tendency to asymmetry toward the left regions of both affected lobes. These findings of frontal-temporal hypoperfusion were associated with moderately severe negative symptoms evaluated by PANSS (social withdrawal, stereotyped thinking, blunted affect, and difficulty in abstract thinking). The findings of this study suggest a disorder of brain neurodynamics expressed by a blood perfusion defect mainly in the left frontal-temporal region that could be predictive for the development of negative symptoms or therapeutic resistance.
