Abstract

Hypertensive states of pregnancy encompass a wide range of clinical conditions of varying severity. Mild symptoms can quickly evolve into severe forms, being one of the main causes of maternal-fetal morbidity and mortality. They have a common pathophysiology that, although still unclear, seems to have a strong relationship with the systemic endothelial dysfunction that occurs when anomalous implantation of the placenta generates placental ischemia. Management involves adequate blood pressure control, seizure prophylaxis and early detection of serious complications such as hemolysis, acute lung edema, heart failure, kidney failure, spontaneous hepatic hematoma or coma. When these occur, the etiological treatment is termination of pregnancy, which is why they are an important cause of iatrogenic preterm birth.
