ALFONSO VARA-MIGUEL is an Associate Professor of Journalism at the University of Navarra, where he teaches the courses Economics, Economic Journalism, and Final Year Project (Journalism degree) as well as Economics (Marketing degree). As a research member of @digitalunav, the research center of the School of Communication at the University of Navarra, his recent research has focused on issues related to the coverage of economic information and the development of new business models in the press sector. He is the principal investigator for the project Artificial Intelligence in Digital Media in Spain (NEXTDIGIMEDIA), funded by the Spanish Ministry of Science, Innovation and Universities (Ref. PID2024-156034OB-C21) in the 2024 Knowledge Generation Projects Call (Duration: 2025–2029). Since 2014, he has been a co-author of the design and analysis of the Digital News Report Spain, coordinated by the Reuters Institute for the Study of Journalism (RISJ) at the University of Oxford. He is a research member of the projects Resilient Media for Democracy in the Digital Age (ReMeD), funded by the European Commission under the European Union’s Horizon Europe Research and Innovation Programme (No. 101094742), and the Iberifier Plus project, co-funded by the European Commission in the DIGITAL-2023-DEPLOY-04 call, European Digital Media Observatory (EDMO) – National and multinational hubs (ref. IBERIFIER Plus - 101158511). Since 1997, he has directed the Economic Journalism Seminar, a pioneering program in Spain for the training of economic journalists.
