Doctor by the Universidad de Navarra with the thesis Nuevas propuestas para el diseño de pórticos y uniones semirrígidas de acero 2006. Supervised by Dr. Eduardo Bayo Pérez.
Architect in 2001. Doctor of Architecture (Extraordinary Prize) in 2006 from the University of Navarra. Professor and Director of the Department of Construction, Installations and Structures at the School of Architecture of the University of Navarra. Three six-year research periods recognised by the CNEAI (2003-2009, 2010-2015, 2016-2021). Director of the Onesta Wood Chair since its foundation in 2011. Since the completion of my thesis, I have conducted research independently of my thesis supervisor and his group, leading the creation of my own line of research in a new area that did not exist in the department, structural wood joints. I have been the principal investigator of competitive research projects, including three projects of the Spanish National Plan and a European project. I have directed several contracts and research projects with companies in the sector. I am currently internationally recognised in the world of timber engineering as one of the European experts in the design of structural joints. I belong to the Eurocode 5 Working Group on Connections (CEN/TC250/SC5/WG5), as the only Spanish expert. I have collaborated with Project Team 5 in the drafting of the future chapter on connections of Eurocode 5, whose final draft was completed in April 2021, and in which some of our models for obtaining the brittle capacity of connections are included. I began my research development in the area of semi-rigid steel structural joints with Prof. Eduardo Bayo, who supervised my doctoral thesis (2001-06, Extraordinary Doctorate Award of the School of Architecture of the University of Navarra). I also collaborated with Prof. Bayo in drafting the chapter on Joints of the current Spanish instruction on steel structures, EAE. After my PhD, I changed my research area to timber structural connections. I enhanced my training with a one-year postdoctoral stay at the Holzbau Institut of the Technische Universität Dresden (Germany). For this I obtained the prestigious Humboldt Fellowship (2007-08), awarded by the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation (an entity dependent on the German Government), being one of the few Spanish scientists in the field of Architecture and Construction to have received it. On my return to Spain, I obtained the support of the Government of Navarra in 2011 for creating the Cátedra Madera at the University of Navarra. I have been the director since its creation. It is currently sponsored by the company Onesta. In it, I carry out research work, consultancy, training and transfer to companies and professionals in the sector. I am active in the scientific community at the international level. I have presented my work at various national and international conferences. I have been invited as a keynote speaker at the Eastern Europe Conference on Timber Constructions EECTC, in its first edition in 2018, and at the Second Forum on Timber Construction in Spain in 2022. I collaborate in scientific committees of several international scientific congresses, such as the World Conference on Timber Engineering WCTE in several editions.
