I obtained my PhD in Biochemistry in 2003 from the University of Navarra (Extraordinary Doctorate Award). In 2005, I received the Norman R. Alpert Award granted by the European Society of Cardiology (ESC) and the American Heart Association. After completing my postdoctoral training at New York Medical College in 2010, I was awarded a Ramón y Cajal contract (Ministry of Science and Innovation, Spain) and obtained certification as an i3 researcher (Government of Navarra and Ministry of Science and Innovation, Spain). I am the Principal Investigator of the Heart Failure Group at CIMA, University of Navarra. In addition, I am Principal Investigator of the Heart Failure Group at the Navarra Health Research Institute (IdiSNA) and Group Leader in the Cardiovascular Biomedical Research Network (CIBERCV, Instituto de Salud Carlos III; CB16/11/00483). In 2020, I entered the Board of the Heart Failure Association (HFA) of the European Society of Cardiology (ESC) for the 2020–2024 terms. I am also a nucleus member of the ESC Working Group on Myocardial Function (2024–2028) and Chair of the HFA Basic and Translational Research Committee (2024–2026). In 2024, I was appointed Corresponding Academician of the Royal Academy of Exact, Physical and Natural Sciences of Spain (Natural Sciences section). I have contributed to over 190 publications in indexed journals (mostly in the first quartile), with more than 18,600 citations and an h-index of 72 (Google Scholar). I have been first or senior author on 44 publications and have published in the most prominent journals in the cardiovascular field. I am first author or co-author of five highly cited articles since 2017, according to Web of Science, ranking in the top 1% of the Clinical Medicine category. I appear on the list of the most highly cited Spanish researchers in the area of “Cardiac and Cardiovascular Systems,” based on h-index. I have served as Principal Investigator for over 20 research projects funded by national, regional, and private organizations, as well as by European Commission framework programs (FP7, H2020, and Horizon Europe). I am also co-inventor on two patents. My research focuses on understanding the contribution of hypertension, chronic kidney disease, metabolic disorders, and aortic valve disease to the development and progression of heart failure, particularly heart failure with preserved ejection fraction. My goal is to elucidate the mechanisms involved in myocardial remodeling, with a specific focus on diffuse myocardial fibrosis, in order to identify novel biomarkers and therapeutic targets. I have extensive experience in identifying circulating biomarkers of myocardial remodeling (mainly fibrosis) with clinical utility for diagnosis, prognosis, and therapeutic monitoring in heart failure patients. I am also involved in undergraduate teaching at the University of Navarra, where I serve as Professor and member of the Department Board of Pathology, Anatomy, and Physiology. I regularly supervise undergraduate and master’s students in their final research projects. I have supervised four PhD theses and am currently supervising three doctoral candidates. I also serve as a mentor within the “Women for Science and Technology” group at the University of Navarra. Finally, I actively participate in public outreach and patient education, taking part in events such as Pint of Science, European Researchers’ Night, Heart Failure Awareness Week, Aula Médica, and the Senior Program at the University of Navarra.
