For some years the activity of speleology has seen its objectives enriched with the study of cavernicolous lifeforms. Many biologists study now the biocoenoses in thousands of cavities throughout the world, including some where only geological data had hitherto been collected. There are also many traditional speleologists who during their expeditions, in addition to making maps and collecting physicochemical parameters, are now collecting biological material that they send to taxonomists with whom they collaborate. The fauna of the caves is at once very interesting and delicate and scarce, so the capture of specimens must be done both with the utmost care and under strict limits in the number of captured specimens. The visit to a cave with fauna, as well as the capture, collection of information, and sample shipment to the taxonomists, should be done with the utmost rigor. We list and summarily describe summarily aspects intended to achieve this objective. The attitudes, methodologies (such as direct capture or traps), materials to be used, labeling, and the shipment procedures are considered. Although most of the methodological issues do not refer to a specific geographic area, we include a key focusing on the genera present in the Iberian Peninsula. However, given the biological wealth existing in this territory, it will be of some use for other regions.
