Resumo

In order to study the occurrence of Ochratoxin A in a southern region of Spain, Granada, 83 blood plasma samples collected from women have been analysed. The method of analysis is based on a liquid-liquid extraction followed by a High Performance Liquid Cromatographic (HPLC) analysis with fluorescence detection. The method has been validated and a detection limit of 0.21 ng/mL has been obtained. Ochratoxin A has been detected in 72% of the samples. The mean value was 0.63 ng/mL, with a standard deviation of 0.41 ng/mL and a range of concentrations from 0.11 ng/mL to 6.96 ng/mL. These results are similar to those found in other northern and medium regions of Spain, and to those found in the surrounding countries. Statistical analysis by Kruskal-Wallis (n = 70; χ2= 4.591; p = 0.597), did not show any difference between plasma levels and the season when the samples were collected. These findings prove the general and wide exposition to Ochratoxin A of Spanish population, although the Daily Ochratoxin A Intake calculated from the mean value obtained in this study, is lower than the maximum level recommended by the Joint FAO/WHO Expert Committee on Food Additives.
