Abstract

The so-called school of Antioch has developed its own approach to Christology, exegesis and anthropology. Can we also add mystagogy to these aspects? We own mystagogical writings of Theodore of Mopsuestia and John Chrisostom. Although some connections between them were clearly present, it seems that they only refer to the form of the rite; in fact, regarding the exegesis, Chrysostom is more open to typology than Theodore who, on the contrary, tried to avoid it without exception; regarding Christology, Chrysostom clearly explained the deity of Christ without the restrictions of Theodore. Is this contrast between Chrysostom and Theodore real? Can we find elements of sacramentary theology and mystagogy in other antiochene authors? There is coherence between these different elements of the various schools. Can we perceive coherence between the way of doing mystagogy in the antiochene writers and the other characteristics of the antiochene theological thought?
