The studies on the academic motivation from the perspective of goals orientation have had great protagonist during the last years. However, this conceptual and empiric approach is not uniform. It has rather evolved from normative conceptions toward others of multidimensional character. The present work analyses the classic and new versions of this theory through the empirical evidences, the inconsistencies and the research developped by both work lines. Finally, the implications for the educational practice derived from the acceptance of some of its principles, ascertained without sufficient contrast, are evaluated.
